Toothache of the Day

If there is one thing I have come to loathe in the past few years, it has been the replacement of the term 'student' with 'learner'. It was supposed to describe a more active process. In fact, it describes a more passive process. The student studies. S/he reads assignments but follows up interests. The learner sits there and learns what is designated.

Several years ago I found I was no longer a student of patchwork but a 'learner', who must articulate her goals each term and then say whether she felt she had met them. I felt as though I ought to hang an L plate round my neck, and furthermore as though there were now certain things I couldn't do until I had 'passed'. What was most annoying was that I was at the time attending a recreational class, where none of this should have been applicable in the first place. /MKS

Brilliantly said. Shifts all the responsibility, but none of the actual power, over to the poor bloody student.
